School
of Medicine

School of Medicine

Since our beginnings as a School of Medicine, our goal has been training health professionals committed to care and maintenance of health and wellbeing, both in the community and hospital environments, while reinforcing institutional values and fostering leadership, research and health promotion.

Providing our future professionals with the knowledge, skills and abilities, as well as the necessary viewpoints, that will allow them to be competent and competitive in any environment or situation they may need to manage, both locally and globally.

Internationalization is one of our strengths. The international agreements and conventions of our School allow our future doctors the opportunity to learn about Medicine in different areas of the world and the possibility of comparing our Health System and undergraduate professional training with that of other countries.

Academic mentoring program

The UNIBE School of Medicine Academic Mentoring and Guidance Program offers its students strategies and resources to help them set and meet their goals, primarily during their preparation for the medical certification exams in the United States (USMLE).

Lack of planning and guidance can prevent students from making progress in preparing to take these exams. The program emphasizes the identification of weaknesses and the design of a precise and individualized action plan. Participants are evaluated in order to get to know their opportunities for improvement and develop a timely work plan, taking into account their personal needs. Each student is monitored by their assigned Mentor, who provides the pertinent recommendations and evaluates progress periodically.

We have a team of mentors from the faculty who are willing to offer counseling and guidance, plus a team of student volunteers who perform the role of "peer mentors", in charge of assisting program members who face difficulties with specific course topics. Both groups (Mentors and Peer Mentors) have successfully passed their USMLE Step 1 and are willing to share their experience.
Who can participate?

Any UNIBE medical student who has completed the first 8 semesters of their program and who is interested in accessing graduate medical studies in the United States.

Clinical rotations

Pre-Internship

The Pre-Internship is the first stage of the Clinical Sciences Cycle, corresponding to the 4th year of the curriculum and covering semesters 11, 12, and 13.

To advance to the Pre-Internship Cycle, students must successfully complete all courses in the Basic Sciences Cycle. Additionally, students enrolled in the bilingual modality are required to demonstrate proficiency in Spanish, as all instruction and hospital practices are conducted entirely in this language. Non-native Spanish speakers must take and pass a language proficiency exam.
"White Gown Ceremony"
This cycle begins with the "White Gown Ceremony," a significant milestone in which students receive their physician's coat—personalized with their name and the UNIBE logo—and sign the Hippocratic Oath. In this solemn act, held in the presence of family and academic authorities, students publicly commit to upholding the highest standards of patient care and bioethical principles.

Internship

The Internship Cycle provides students with the opportunity to apply their acquired knowledge and further develop clinical skills and competencies through rotations in specialized areas across various teaching hospitals affiliated with the university.

Each rotation is carefully designed to deliver a comprehensive educational experience. Students rotate through two healthcare centers with distinct characteristics and levels of development, ensuring consistency and quality in the overall learning experience for all participants.

Clinical rotations within the internship cycle

During the internship cycle, students have the opportunity to apply the knowledge they have acquired and develop clinical skills and abilities through rotations in specialized areas within different teaching hospitals.

They strengthen competencies in identifying risk factors, applying diagnostic criteria, and implementing evidence-based therapeutics for prevalent reproductive health issues.
8 weeks
Pediatrics
Through this rotation, students apply and expand their knowledge, skills, and abilities while directly engaging with the various stages of child growth and development. They deliver comprehensive care to children and adolescents, emphasizing health promotion, disease prevention, accurate diagnosis, and treatment of common pediatric conditions.

Internal Medicine
This rotation allows students to consolidate competencies for addressing major adult health issues. They recognize clinical manifestations, interpret diagnostic methods, and provide effective, evidence-based treatment while prioritizing prevention and disease management according to updated protocols.
6 weeks
Primary Care and Family Health
In this rotation, students deliver comprehensive care at primary health centers, applying a family-centered and biopsychosocial approach. They identify lifestyle and environmental risk factors, promote health education, and master interventions aligned with the Dominican Social Security System's Basic Health Plan.

United States Medical Licensing Examination®

Strategies, policies and procedures
for applying to the USMLE exam

From their arrival at the School of Medicine, students are exposed to various strategies and interactions aimed at promoting and developing the necessary skills for their proper performance in the USMLE exams.
Every semester, orientation meetings are held with students of the Pre-Medical and Basic Sciences cycles, in order to recommend strategies to develop the knowledge and skills evaluated in this exam, to offer guidelines for anxiety management, as well as to propose individual work plans to overcome identified needs.
During the Basic Sciences Cycle, diagnostic tests are applied as practice for students to become familiar with the content and format of the exam.
During the 10th semester, the “Integrated Basic Sciences” course is offered, instructing students on the assessment methodology used for the USMLE.
We offer an Academic Mentoring Program, where we work individually with each student according to their academic and personal needs.
Active students and graduates who wish to apply to the ECFMG to take Step 1, Step 2CK and CS of the USMLE, are evaluated by the USMLE Monitoring Sub-Committee.
