AMSA

Mission

The American Medical Student Association (AMSA) is committed to improve the quality of health services as well as promoting health for everyone: we believe that through medial education and the involvement of the community in obligations of social, moral and ethic character. It offers assistance for the improvement and knowledge of the global problems of health.  It contributes to the wellbeing of students of the school of medicine, pre-medic, interns, residents and other areas of the medical profession.

Goals

For more than half a century, AMSA has represented the voice of doctors in training with the objective, most importantly, to serve patients. During the year 2007, the AMSA leaders selected 4 goals that emphasize the performance of their members. AMSA undertakes to dedicate time, energy, and resources to achieve their goals in the following areas:

  • Global HealthIt embraces themes regarding health, security, opportunity and the environment, in order to conform a healthy society. It also projects the interconnection of all individuals and our responsibility to offer rational and proportional assistance to everyone, independently from the country where people live.  Justice and equity are fundamentals that assure that races, religion, income, gender, sexual preferences or nationality do not become factors that limit the access to good quality attention.
  • Enriching Medicine through DiversityWhile the world is more integrated and mobile, the need of a new health labor force to reflect our society grows and becomes smarter. AMSA´s independence was driven by the era of civil rights and continues at present in the promotion of a culturally correct attention, representing medical providers, and admission criterions that are not harmful, starting from different origins.
  • Professional Integrity, Development and Student Wellbeing
Medics have had, for a long time, a sacred social mission and AMSA has the object to help create doctors who comply with their duties towards patients and society as well.  An important aspect of the profession, however, implies personal care, and we are dedicated to help doctors in training throughout the pre-graduation formation, residence doctors, while seeking equilibrium and compromise and maintaining personal and professional growth.

The Dean of our school is in charge of welcoming those present, taking the opportunity to expose all the achievements for which we must be thankful every day. An explanation is given about the significance of Advent for Catholics, a moment of hope, to be born again, exhorting the participants not to lose hope  regardless o the situation in which we may be found or the obstacles that may arise.

As usual, the students bless the food which marks the beginning of a luscious dinner prepared for our community of foreign students. This activity counts with the harmonization of student groups such as the university band, UNIBE dance groups and the winners o the Talent Show sponsored by AMSA.
