Graduate Studies

In 1986 the Universidad Iberoamericana (UNIBE) began offering the first programs of specialization in the medical area. Currently UNIBE endorses the following programs of Medical Residencies: Diabetes and Nutrition and Ophthalmology at Instituto Nacional de la Diabetes y Nutrición (INDEN)  (National Institute of Diabetes and Nutrition), Family Medicine, Emergency Medicine and Disasters Response, Physical Rehabilitation Medicine, Intensive Care and Critical Medicine, Radiology and Diagnostic Images, Critical Pediatric Medicine, in the Regional Hospital named “Hospital General de la Plaza  de la Salud” (HGPS), Family Medicine at the Regional General Hospital Dr. Marcelino Vélez Santana, Family Medicine and Geriatrics in the Dr. Vinicio Calventi Hospital and the Sub Specialty/Fellowship of Cataract Surgery, and in the Instituto Espaillat Cabral.

All the residency programs meet all the requirements and demands established by the Ministry of Public Health (Ministerio de Salud Publica)(MISPAS) and the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology. (Ministerio de Educación Superior, Ciencia y Tecnología (MESCYT),)

With the object of guaranteeing an adequate follow-up of these programs the university created the Medical Residency Coordination located in the Faculty of Health Sciences at UNIBE.  This post graduate unit of the School of Medicine is responsible of planning, coordinating and supervising of these specialization programs, to guarantee the quality in the formation of these human resources.

1.DIABETOLOGY AND NUTRITION

Description:

The physician from this residency program will be widely identified by the representation of Diabetes Mellitus in the Dominican Republic and worldwide, not ONLY in the physiopathology and therapeutic aspects but also in the social and occupational aspect affected by this illness.

During their training, these doctors will obtain knowledge, skills and necessary training for the management of the Diabetes Mellitus problematic and everything related to human nutrition.

2. OPHTHALMOLOGY

Descripción:

The objective of this residency program is to form medical specialists of Ophthalmology capable of solving the principal visual problems affecting the Dominican population and contribute to improve their visual health and their quality of life.

During the development of the plan of studies, the graduates obtain preparation in accord with the scientific and technological advances in this area of medicine.

4. EMERGENCY MEDICINE AND DISASTERS RESPONSE

8. GERIATRICS

This sub-specialty program is addressed to doctors with a basic formation of Internal Medicine (pre-requisite: two years)  and the integrated approach toward the geriatric patient from the bio/ psycho social ambit along a chain that begins with the changes (Morphological, Psychological, Functional and Social) that originates from the process of individual aging and continues with the prevention and management of different situations of illnesses and culminates with an interdisciplinary performance, in the assistance in different levels, pertaining to the system as well as the health of  society.

9. SUBSPECIALTY IN CATARACT AND REFRACTIVE SURGERY

This training program is intended for ophthalmologists who have completed a residency program of more than three (3) years, interested in specializing in this technical area. For the duration of the program, doctors function as general ophthalmologists at the Institute while following a theoretical-practical program that will provide them with the necessary tools to successfully perform the corrective surgical procedures to cure blindness caused by cataracts. After completing this training, the specialist will be authorized to perform procedures without direct supervision.

10. INTENSIVE CARE AND CRITICAL MEDICINE

The formation of specialists of intensive care polyvalent of adults will be addressed to doctors who possess a basic clinical specialty with a minimum of four (4) years residence, of Internal Medicine preference, Anesthesiology, or Emergency Medicine.

The duration will be of two (2) years, during which, the resident doctor will acquire the necessary knowledge to recognize and manage the principal conditions that may seriously affect the individual.

11.- RADIOLOGY AND DIAGNOSTIC IMAGES

 The medical specialty of Radiology and Diagnostic Images is composed of all the areas of medical knowledge which, through the use of technologies such as Radiology, Ultrasound,  Computerized Tomography, Magnetic Resonance, Mammography, Nuclear Medicine, Osteodensitometry, and Angiographic Diagnostic and Intervention Techniques,  allow a close approach to pathology diagnosis of a diverse nature (congenital traumatic, neoplastic, inflammatory, infectious, immunological, among others).

12. PEDIATRIC CRITICAL MEDICINE

The formation of specialists of Pediatric Intensive Care is addressed to doctors with pediatric specialization.  It will have a duration of three (3) years during which the pediatrician will acquire the necessary knowledge to recognize and manage the principal conditions that may seriously affect a child.

DURATION: 3 years  |  TITLE ISSUED: Specialist of Critical Pediatric Medicine

Requirements to enter medical residency programs

  • Must be a medical graduate from an officially recognized School of Medicine in the country by the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology (MESCYT).
  • Present official transcripts of degree in Medicine, authenticated by the MESCYT.
  • Possess medical license to practice medicine or certification proving that accreditation is being sought, and documents showing completion of apprenticeship time.  Foreigners will show evidence from their country in a professional identification document issued in their country in substitution of the apprenticeship document for the legal practice of medicine.
  • Take general residency examination, sole exam with a DATE and PLACE established by the National Counsel of Medical Residencies (Consejo Nacional de Residencia Médicas CNRM) that is published in a newspaper of national circulation, imparted at Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo (Autonomous University of Santo Domingo)(UASD).
  • Participate in interview performed by the office of the residency programs pertaining to the hospital to which application is being made.
  • Deposit a Curriculum Vitae and pertinent documents.
  • Must be selected by the Consejo de Enseñanza (Instruction Counsel), of the teaching hospital that implements the residency program.
  • In the case of a graduate from a foreign university, in addition to all the above mentioned requirements, all documents must be presented authenticated by the Consulate of the Dominican Republic operating in the country of origin and legalized by the MESCYT (Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology) in the D.R.

  4. The admission process will take place during the period March-April of each academic year. This process is completed in an individual manner.
  5. At the time of admission there will be a financial contribution to be paid, previously established by UNIBE.
