Academic Policies
The following reference to academic regulations
is a general summary of important aspects and
does not constitute the entire set of academic
policies. UNIBE's academic requirements and
regulations are contained in the Academic
Regulations Handbook.
Attendance Requirements
A student must meet a minimum class attendance
record of 80% in any given subject in order to
be entitled to take the final exam. In case of
an absence due to illness, the student must
present a medical certificate, specifying the
nature of the ailment, to the authorities of the
School of Medicine who will take a decision on
the matter.
Academic Evaluations
UNIBE evaluates a student's performance on a
given subject through tools used by each
professor. Individual evaluation is a continuous
process throughout the duration of the semester.
It is measured through research work,
presentations, class participation, exams, and
any other evaluation method considered efficient
in accordance with the general and specific
objectives of the program.
Examinations take place on the eighth week
interval, or midterm, and during the last week
of the semester. Grading System
Final grades are the sum of the evaluations
obtained during the two partials. A minimum
grade of 70 points must be obtained in order to
pass the course.
An "A" is between 90-100 points. Value 4.
A "B" is between 80-89 points. Value 3.
A "C" is between 70-79 points. Value 2.
A "D" is between 60-69 points. Value 1. Students
receiving a "D" grade must retake the course.
An "I" is given when the student does not
complete a project, seminar, and or
an examination. If the student does not complete
the work within the limit of
time established by the Academic Calendar, the
"I" will automatically become an "F".
Good Standing
A student enjoys a Good Standing status when the
following conditions are met:
- Has a C average or above.
- University ethical and clinical conduct is
maintained.
- Financial obligations and commitments to the
School are met.
Withdrawal
Official withdrawal occurs when a student
withdraws from the School and the required
procedures are met. A student may withdraw from
a course, without any academic penalty. If the
withdrawal takes place within the deadline
established by the academic calendar, the course
must be subsequently repeated.
Unofficial withdrawal occurs when a
student stops attending classes during a
semester, or fails to register the next semester
and does not complete the required procedures.
Graduation Requirements
The following pre-requisites must be
met in order to be eligible for a Medical
Doctor's Degree (MD):
1) Satisfactory completion of all the academic
requirements.
2) Meet all financial and library obligations
established by UNIBE.
3) Graduation candidates are submitted to the
university's Academic Board whose approval of
the degree depends on the recommendation of the
Medicine Academic Authorities.
All student's records are subject to regulations
for certification established by the National
Council of Superior Education (CONES), under
Resolution 002/95CONES.
All documents regarding credits transferred and
degrees conferred in institutions outside the
Dominican Republic, which are not translated
into Spanish must be translated by an official
translator for certification by the CONES.
CONES, as the government regulating institution
of post-secondary education in the Dominican
Republic, acts under its own regulations. UNIBE
has no authority in the implementation of these
rules and policies. UNIBE does however have the
obligation to inform students concerning CONES
policies.
